What's a CD?  CDs are similar to savings accounts in that they are insured "money in the bank" and thus virtually risk-free. In the USA, CDs are insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) for credit unions. They differ from savings accounts in that the CD has a specific, fixed term and, usually, a fixed interest rate. The bank intends that the customer hold the CD until maturity, at which time they can withdraw the money and accrued interest.

What's an IRA? An Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is an account designed for building retirement savings. Unlike an ordinary savings account, it allows you to purchase investments, such as mutual funds and stocks and offers tax breaks that can save you thousands of dollars over the life of the account.

What's an ESA? A Coverdell Education Savings Account is a tax-advantaged investment account in the United States designed to encourage savings to cover future education expenses (elementary, secondary, or college), such as tuition, books, and uniforms (for the same year as the distribution). Like a 529 plan, Coverdell ESAs allow money to grow tax deferred and proceeds to be withdrawn tax-free for qualified education expenses at a qualified institution. However, the definition of qualified expenses in an ESA includes primary and secondary school, not just college and university.
